Storm Lake City Council Approves Contract for King’s Pointe Lighthouse Elevator Repairs

The Storm Lake City Council on Monday approved a contract which will allow repairs to be made to the King’s Pointe lighthouse elevator.

The existing controls on the elevator were found to be obsolete, and the City has been unable to obtain the needed parts to put the elevator back into use. The project will consist of replacing the hydraulic pump, elevator control systems, and an in-cab communications system will be installed to keep it in line with current standards.

Since the elevator isn’t in service, the stairway access is currently closed as well due to provisions with the Americans With Disabilities Act. Storm Lake Mayor Mike Porsch is looking forward to the elevator being operational again…(audio clip below)

The contract is with Schumacher Elevator Company and Rebnord Technologies for a total cost of a little over 97-thousand dollars.

City Building Official Scott Olesen said work on the lighthouse elevator should be completed in May or June. Once repairs are made, the lighthouse will be available once again for public use.
