Storm Lake Expands Clean-Up Program to Six-Month Window

Storm Lake’s Citywide Clean-Up program is getting a major overhaul.

At Monday’s council meeting, city staff introduced a new format designed to make the program more flexible and accessible.

Instead of a single clean-up day, residents will now have six months—from November through May—to dispose of unwanted items at the Buena Vista County Recycling Center. Tickets go on sale November 1 at City Hall, limited to two per household at $15 each. Each ticket covers a car or pickup load; trailers require an additional ticket.

City staff emphasized that the same disposal restrictions apply—no construction debris, hazardous waste, junk vehicles, or ceramic fixtures. Residents must follow recycling center rules and are responsible for transporting their own items.

Citywide Clean-Up Program Manager Kim Woltman says the change is expected to save the city thousands in overtime and dumpster rental costs, which mayor Mick Porsch applauded.

The program will be evaluated annually, with updates to the city council each June.
