Tree Grant Brings New Life to Storm Lake

Storm Lake is getting a boost of greenery this week, thanks to a Community Tree Planting grant from Trees Forever, funded by Alliant Energy.

Mayor Mike Porsch made the announcement at Monday’s city council meeting.

The grant will fund 26 trees of six different varieties, helping restore the lakefront canopy after April’s devastating wind storm, says Porsch.

Porsch says even though the grant window had closed, Trees Forever and Alliant Energy stepped up.

Three public planting events are planned. The first is at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow at Harmony Garden on the Storm Lake Public Library grounds, with help from the library’s elementary school Partners in Excellence Class. The second is at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Chautauqua Park, with assistance from Buena Vista University students. The third is at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Sunset Park, with help from the Storm Lake Cub Scouts.

Porsch encourages residents to attend the planting events.
