The City of Storm Lake has enacted mandatory water conservation measures, citing high demand and reduced supply after two municipal wells were taken offline for repairs and testing.
City officials say water use has remained near maximum capacity despite an earlier voluntary conservation request.
City Manager Keri Navratil says the restrictions are necessary to ensure an adequate supply for residents, businesses and emergency needs, including firefighting. The rules apply not only within Storm Lake but also to outside users in Lakeside, Lake Creek and Truesdale.
Under the mandatory order, lawn watering is prohibited between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., and residential vehicle washing is not allowed between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. The city also bans using water to clean driveways and sidewalks, and power washing requires city approval and must be scheduled during non‑peak hours. Refilling pools is not permitted without approval, and any allowed refilling must occur during lower demand periods.
Watering food gardens is still allowed when necessary, while watering flowers and other plants should be minimal and avoided during peak daytime hours. The city is asking residents to delay planting sod and seedlings until further notice. Drinking water cannot be used for dust control or construction without permission.
Violations of the restrictions may result in municipal infraction penalties.
