Storm Lake Clarifies Eighth‑Grade Sports Move‑Up Rules

Storm Lake schools are tightening expectations on eighth‑grade athletes as the district clarifies its move‑up policy for high school sports.

The Storm Lake Community School District Board of Education reviewed the updated guidelines during its Wednesday afternoon meeting, with Superintendent Dr. Stacey Cole outlining how the district will handle requests — and when eighth‑graders may be considered for high school competition.

Cole began by noting the item was informational only, and she walked the board through the policy language. She told board members the district made one key clarification to ensure it’s clear who makes the final decision.

Cole emphasized that eighth‑graders will not be moved up simply to fill out rosters, and football remains off limits entirely.

She added that parents cannot request a move solely because a particular team doesn’t have a junior varsity option.

Cole said the district’s flow chart makes clear that eighth‑graders would only be considered if they are projected to be impact varsity players, not for developmental roles.

Her comments come as districts statewide respond to emergency rules approved in June by the Iowa State Board of Education, allowing eighth‑graders to play varsity sports if districts choose. Some administrators — including Webster City High School principal Jason Wedgbury — have warned that districts must weigh both the benefits and risks, noting that physical maturity, academic readiness and long‑term implications should all factor into decisions. Several districts, including Algona, Eagle Grove and Forest City, have already voted to allow eighth‑graders to compete at the varsity level.

Cole said Storm Lake will finalize its policy, send a letter to families and notify coaches. No board action was required Wednesday.
