Spencer Hospital is earning national recognition for its leadership in lifesaving training.
The hospital’s Training Center has been named an American Heart Association All‑Star, placing it among the very first training centers in the country to receive the new designation—and the only one in the region to make the inaugural list.
The All‑Star award is reserved for programs that consistently deliver top‑tier CPR and emergency cardiovascular care training, follow the latest national guidelines, and meet strict performance benchmarks. The American Heart Association says these centers form the backbone of its effort to build a “Nation of Lifesavers,” ensuring more people are prepared to respond when cardiac emergencies strike.
Hospital leaders say the recognition reflects years of work behind the scenes.
Training Center Coordinator Chris Meyer says the award represents the real‑world impact instructors make every day—giving health care workers, first responders, and community members the confidence and skills to act quickly in critical moments.
Hospital President and CEO Brenda Tiefenthaler calls the honor a testament to the dedication of the center’s instructors, who she says are deeply committed to strengthening the chain of survival across northwest Iowa.
The Spencer Hospital Training Center serves more than 250 instructors across four states, including Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. Since its founding in 2009, the center has become a major regional hub for CPR and AED training, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. Its affiliation with the American Heart Association ensures every course meets national standards and prepares learners to respond effectively when seconds matter.
Hospital officials say the All‑Star designation also highlights Spencer Hospital’s broader mission: extending its reach beyond patient care inside the building and into the communities it serves. By training more people to recognize cardiac emergencies and immediately begin lifesaving measures, the hospital hopes to improve survival rates across the region.
Spencer Hospital continues to expand its services, offering a full‑service hospital, a comprehensive cancer center, inpatient behavioral health, a multi‑specialty surgical center, four primary care clinics, and dialysis centers in Spencer and Spirit Lake.
