Altoona Man Sentenced to Prison for Alta Home Invasion Assault

A central Iowa man has been sentenced to prison for a February home‑invasion assault in Alta in which he impersonated law enforcement and attacked a victim with a firearm.

Twenty‑six‑year‑old Trenton Miller of Altoona was sentenced last Monday in Buena Vista County District Court by Judge Carl Petersen. The charges stem from a Feb. 20 incident, when Miller entered an Alta residence while pretending to be a law enforcement officer. Prosecutors say he displayed a firearm, struck the victim in the face with the weapon, and took the victim’s cellphone before leaving the home.

Miller entered a written guilty plea the same day as sentencing. He pleaded guilty to first-degree harassment and two counts of impersonating a public official, all aggravated misdemeanors, along with going armed with intent, a Class D felony, and willful injury, a Class C felony. Several additional charges were dismissed under the plea agreement.

Judge Petersen sentenced Miller to a term not to exceed 10 years with the Iowa Department of Corrections. All counts will run concurrently.

The Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case. Assistant County Attorney Ashley Herrig prosecuted, with County Attorney Paul Allen representing the State at sentencing.
