Storm Lake Monarch Mosaic Mural

The Witter Gallery held a dedication ceremony this month (Sept.) for the Monarch Mosaic Mural, located on Erie Street, and celebrates the community’s diversity. The mural displays 63 butterflies on it, representing the number of nationalities currently living in Storm Lake.

In addition, the monarch united the two societies…those migrating to Storm Lake in the spring and fall, and then to artists’ regions in Mexico in the winter.

The mural is made of tiny fragments of crushed tile by four artists that traveled almost 2,000 miles. Hispanic students from Buena Vista University also had a hand in helping out.

According to a news release, a plaque at the mural notes that monarch butterflies are migrating “emissaries of joy and spirituality.”

Another mural is already being planned for Spring of 2024 to be on BVU’s campus. Witter Gallery is planning to continue projects in the future.
