Rain Continued to Delay Planting Last Week

Precipitation last week continued to delay planting in many parts of Iowa.

According to the state’s USDA Crop Progress Report, 3.2 days were suitable for fieldwork statewide, with a little over three-and-a-half days suitable in northwest Iowa.

Corn planted reached 49 percent statewide, three days ahead of last year, but two days behind the five-year average. Corn emerged reached ten percent, two days ahead of last year, and three days ahead of the average. In northwest Iowa, 71 percent of corn has been planted, with nine percent emerged.

38 percent of the state’s expected soybean crop has been planted, one week ahead of last year, and two days ahead of the five-year average. Soybeans emerged reached five percent. 47 percent of northwest Iowa soybeans have been planted, with four percent emerged.

73 percent of northwest Iowa topsoil has adequate moisture, while 65 percent of subsoil in northwest Iowa has adequate moisture.
