Denison Woman Charged for Previously Neglecting Children Following Traffic Stop in Storm Lake

A Denison woman who was wanted on a Buena Vista County warrant regarding neglected children was arrested on multiple charges following a traffic stop this past weekend.

According to the Storm Lake Police Department, an officer conducted the traffic stop on a vehicle in the one-thousand block of Seneca Street at approximately 8pm Saturday. The driver was identified as 36-year-old Nyakong Dak of Denison. Police found that Dak had a revoked driving status in Iowa for Operating While Intoxicated, and was taken into custody for Driving While Revoked, a serious misdemeanor.

Police also discovered there was a valid arrest warrant for Dak issued through Buena Vista County for Abandonment/Neglect of a Dependent Person, a class C felony. The warrant stemmed from a report to Storm Lake Police last autumn concerning teenage children who were left to care for themselves for extended periods of time between the summer of 2022 to last fall at a residence in Storm Lake.

Dak was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on an 11-thousand dollar bond. Storm Lake Police were assisted in the investigation by the Iowa Department of Human Services, MercyOne Child Advocacy Center, and the BV County Attorney’s Office.
