Aurelia and Marcus Police Chief Brian Flikeid is being recognized on a national stage for his work supporting crime victims and strengthening community safety.
Flikeid has been selected as a recipient of the Freedom 250 Hometown Hero Award, an honor presented by the U.S. Attorneyâs Office for the Northern District of Iowa. The award is part of a nationwide effort tied to Americaâs upcoming 250th birthday, highlighting individuals whose service has made a measurable impact in their communities.
Federal officials cited Flikeidâs leadership and hands-on advocacy for crime victims as the reason for his selection, noting his work extends beyond his duties as police chief. Flikeid serves on the S.A.F.E. Center of Iowa Board, the Centers Against Abuse and Sexual Assault Board and the Cherokee County Sexual Assault Response Team, helping shape how agencies respond to victims in some of their most difficult moments.
He has also taken that advocacy to the state level, testifying before Iowa lawmakers on legislation aimed at improving victim services and strengthening support systems statewide. Colleagues say heâs become a goâto resource for training and guidance on victimâcentered practices, often speaking at events across Iowa.
Locally, Flikeid has earned a reputation for balancing community policing with broader service work. Residents in Aurelia and Marcus praised his commitment, saying his efforts have improved both public safety and the way victims navigate the justice system.
A statement from the U.S. Attorneyâs Office congratulated him on the award, adding, âWe are proud of you and blessed to have you serving our communities.â
