Tornado Boys Basketball Clinches Outright Lakes Title–Girls Come Up Short To Braves

The Storm Lake boys basketball team beat Cherokee 80-58 Tuesday night in front of a packed Tornado Fieldhouse, the win gives the Tornadoes their first outright Lakes Conference championship since the 1980 State Championship team.

Trey Boettcher made 9-of-17 shots, including six 3-pointers, and scored a game high 25 points. Jaidyn Coon scored 16 of his 20 points in the 2nd half and also grabbed nine rebounds and blocked five shots. Cam Boyd chipped in with 13 points.

Cherokee shot 64-percent from the field in the first half but trailed 47-37 at the break. The Tornadoes shot 49-percent from the field for the game and made ten 3-pointers. The Tornado girls lost to the Braves 61-49. Storm Lake was plagued by foul trouble all night and had three players foul out of the game. Cherokee went on a 12-0 run over the final six minutes of the first half to build a 31-25 lead at the break. The Braves had a ten point lead late in the 3rd quarter that Storm Lake would cut to three at 47-44 with six minutes to go but the home town team could get no closer.

Addy Wolfswinkel scored a game high 25 points for Cherokee as the Braves move their overall record to 13-2. Storm Lake was led by Adeeya Yanga’s 14 points and Grace Kenkel had 11. The Tornadoes fall to 10-7 overall and 2-5 in the Lakes Conference. Click below to hear from head coach Nate Reichter.

The Storm Lake basketball teams don’t play again until next week with home games starting Tuesday against Denison-Schleswig, Thursday against Fort Dodge, and Friday versus Spencer.
