Sioux Central Girls Basketball Is State Bound

Morgan Christian and Avery Wilson scored 15 points each and the Sioux Central girls basketball team beat Pocahontas Area 51-32 in a class 2A regional final played Wednesday night at Spencer securing their first ever berth in the girls State Tournament.

The Rebels outscored the Indians 27-13 in the 2nd half including 6-0 in the 4th quarter. The Rebels Hadley Ayers made a 3-pointer to open the scoring in the 2nd half, just her 9th made three on the year, turning a 24-19 lead at the half into a quick eight point advantage. Pocahontas Area would cut the deficit to 29-27 with under five minutes left in the 3rd quarter but that is when the Rebels responded with a 7-0 run which was capped off by Caitlin Wildeman’s 3-pointer to make it 36-27 with three minutes left in the 3rd. Wildeman entered the game having made 1-of-20 three point attempts all year. From that point it was Sioux Central’s defense that got the job done.

Pocahontas Area was led in scoring by Madison Vial’s 12 points and the Indians conclude their year with a record of 14-9.

Christian scored 11 of her points in the 1st half while Wilson scored 11 of hers in the 2nd half, Preslie Peterson added nine points. The Rebels will take a 22-1 record into the State Tournament, they are the number four seed and will play 5th seeded Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (23-1) next Tuesday night at 8:30pm.
