Newell Fonda Girls Basketball Adds Another State Qualifying Banner

For the 7th straight year and 19th time in school history, the Newell Fonda girls basketball team will make a state tournament trip after the #2 Mustangs routed 13th ranked Coon Rapids Bayard 80-33 Wednesday in a 1A region final in Fort Dodge.

Newell Fonda built a 16-1 lead and was ahead 25-5 after the 1st quarter. The Mustangs led 40-16 at halftime. Newell Fonda hit 11 of their 12 threes in the 2nd half, including seven in the 3rd quarter. Greta Larsen drilled back to back triples to get the 35-point continuous clock going with just over a minute to go in the 3rd. The Mustangs went 12 of 28 from the arc.

Kinzee Hinders scored 20 of her 22 points in the 1st half, and was ten of 11 from the field on the night. McKenna Sievers followed with 11. Hinders, Sievers, and coach Dick Jungers talked after the game…

Ava Vie added ten points off the bench for the Mustangs. Newell Fonda had 21 steals including five for both Sievers and Mareni Brabec. The Mustangs are now 22-2 on the season. Coon Rapids Bayard finishes at 20-4.

Newell Fonda is the 2nd seed in the 1A state tournament. They will play 7th seeded Calumus Wheatland next Wednesday, February 28th at 5pm in the quarterfinals at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
