Newell Fonda Basketball Teams Defeat Ridge View

Tuesday’s non-conference doubleheader in Newell began with the 2nd ranked in 1A Newell Fonda girls beating Ridge View 79-20.

The Mustangs were never behind, and put together a pair of 12-0 runs along with a 9-0 stretch in the 1st half to take a 42-12 lead into halftime.

Ten Mustangs put points on the board, including four in double figures led by Kierra Jungers with 16, and McKenna Sievers had 12. The Raptors were led by Madison Stowater with 15.

The Newell Fonda girls are now 8-1. Ridge View’s three-game winning is snapped, as they sit at 4-4. Newell Fonda coach Dick Jungers talked afterward…

The Newell Fonda boys held off a late Raptors surge in a 62-58 win.

Ridge View jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the game, but the Mustangs answered with seven in a row as the lead changed hands three times in the 1st quarter. Newell Fonda went ahead for good at 10-8, and led 16-10 after eight minutes. The Mustangs led by as many as 14 points late in the 2nd quarter and carried a 41-30 lead at halftime.

Newell Fonda led by 13 going into the 4th quarter. Back-to-back threes by Kinnick Jensen cut the Mustangs lead to 58-55 with 2:30 remaining. Jacksyn Hogrefe hit one of two free throws for the Mustangs to put them up by four, but a Raptors layup brought the score to 59-57. With 6.4 seconds left, Hogrefe hit one of two free throws again to make it a three-point game. Carter Todd was fouled quickly deep in the backcourt with 4.2 seconds left, made the first three throw, and missed the second on purpose. Newell Fonda got the rebound, Max Carlson was fouled with 2.7 left, and hit both free throws for the winning margin.

Hogrefe led the way with 24 points, including 16 in the 1st half when he hit all four of his threes. Hogrefe and coach Chad Buchholz talked after the game…

Carlson added 16 points for Newell Fonda.

Kinnick Jensen had 17 for the Raptors, and Todd followed with 15.

The Newell Fonda boys second consecutive win puts them at 4-5, while Ridge View is also 4-5.

The Newell Fonda teams play Friday at Spencer.

The Ridge View teams don’t play again until January 2nd when they’ll host Sioux Central.
