Waterfight Practice Returns to SLFD Thanks to Unique Partnership

The Storm Lake Fire Department kicked off a series of waterfighting practice sessions yesterday evening behind the fire station, with additional drills scheduled for August 17th and 24th. Practices begin around 4 p.m. and continue into the evening, weather permitting.

This year’s training is made possible through a partnership with the Newell Fire Department, which is supplying water for the exercises. Storm Lake has faced limitations in recent years due to local water conservation efforts, making the collaboration especially valuable, says Jeff Goodman of the Storm Lake Fire Department.

Waterfighting is a competitive drill where teams use firehoses to push a suspended barrel across a wire toward the opposing side. While the event is a staple of firefighter competitions, it also sharpens real-world skills—such as hose control, equipment handling, and coordinated movement in active fire scenarios.

The sessions serve as preparation for the Iowa Firefighters’ Association convention in early September, where departments statewide compete in various skill-based events. Spectators are welcome to observe the practice, though parking at the training site will be restricted. Area departments interested in joining the drills are encouraged to contact the Storm Lake Fire Department for more details.
