The Storm Lake Police Department says a tense standoff on the city’s east side ended safely Friday evening after officers responded to an assault involving a firearm in the 800 blocks of Harmony Court and Lilly Court.
Police were called Friday afternoon to a report of an assault in the neighborhood. As officers arrived, the situation escalated, prompting a large law enforcement response that included the department’s Tactical Entry Team and crisis negotiators.
Around 6 p.m., residents in the immediate area were told to evacuate if possible, while others were instructed to shelter in place as officers worked to contain the incident.
Police issued an all‑clear shortly before 6:40 p.m., announcing on the department’s Facebook page that the scene had been secured and residents could return to normal activity. Investigators and crime scene personnel remained on site into the evening to process evidence, and the public was asked to avoid the area while that work continued.
In a follow‑up statement on Facebook Saturday morning, Storm Lake police leadership thanked residents for their patience during the temporary road closures and heavy police presence. The department also commended the officers involved, noting that several were called in while off duty and others stayed well past the end of their shifts to ensure the situation ended without injuries. Police said the response removed another firearm from the streets and prevented further danger to the neighborhood.
Officials added that, despite dealing with individuals who were verbally abusive and uncooperative, officers remained calm and professional throughout the standoff. The department emphasized its commitment to aggressively investigating violent incidents and maintaining safety in Storm Lake.
A full press release with additional details is expected today.
