St. Mary’s middle school students wrapped up the school year with a trip to Living History Farms in Urbandale, an experience designed to rotate annually among science, fine arts and social studies themes. The school uses the year‑end trip to give sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders hands-on learning opportunities tied to Iowa history and culture.
Students traveled in mixed‑grade groups as they explored historical settings ranging from the 1700s to the early 1900s. They learned about Native American dwellings, homesteading and daily life in early Iowa communities. Highlights included visits to the print shop, blacksmith and drugstore, along with time spent at the 1900s farm, where students especially enjoyed seeing the livestock.
School officials said the weather made for an ideal field trip and noted that the experience supports the school’s goal of providing meaningful, real world learning outside the classroom.
The trip was supported in part by the Parents and Teachers of Panthers organization and a Simpson College grant aimed at promoting Iowa government and history. Teachers and parent volunteers also accompanied students.
St. Mary’s Catholic School is enrolling for the 2026–27 school year. For more information, contact the school office at 712‑732‑4166.
