SLPD Arrest Suspect After Scooter’s Drive‑Thru Incident

The Storm Lake Police Department arrested a local man Saturday evening after officers responded to a report of a vehicle burglary in progress near Scooter’s Coffee on Seneca Street.

Police say the incident began around 7:26 p.m., when a caller reported that a man had unlawfully entered a vehicle waiting in the drive‑thru lane. The vehicle was occupied by an estranged ex‑girlfriend of the suspect and her children. According to authorities, the man — identified as 36‑year‑old Martin Guillen of Storm Lake — told the victim he had a gun and instructed her not to call anyone.

As officers arrived, Guillen fled on foot. Police pursued him across the parking area and apprehended him a short distance away in the Fareway lot. Officers say Guillen refused repeated commands and physically resisted for several minutes before he was taken into custody. During the struggle, a Taser was deployed, and police allege Guillen continued resisting after being placed in a patrol vehicle, kicking out a rear window and causing it to shatter.

Guillen was taken to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center for minor injuries and later transported to the Buena Vista County Jail. He faces multiple charges, including second‑degree burglary, a Class C felony; assault while participating in a felony and second‑degree criminal mischief, both Class D felonies; and three counts of interference with official acts causing bodily injury. He is being held on a $50,500 bond.

Three Storm Lake Police officers sustained minor injuries that did not require medical treatment.

The Iowa State Patrol and the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
