Sioux Rapids is putting its future on the drawing board, and every resident’s voice is part of the blueprint.
A community design workshop will be held from 4-7 p.m. next Tuesday, June 30, in the greenspace behind 101 Main St. If it rains, the event moves to the Sioux Rapids Historical Society.
The workshop — hosted by Sioux Rapids Hometown Pride and the Community Visioning Team — is the next major step in the Iowa’s Living Roadways Community Visioning Program, a yearlong planning effort sponsored by the Iowa Department of Transportation in partnership with Iowa State University Extension Landscape Architecture and Trees Forever.
Northwest Iowa Hometown Pride Community Coach Carissa Harvey says the design workshop comes after months of gathering local input through surveys, focus groups and public engagement.
Harvey says transportation access and safety have been among the most common themes.
Flood resilience is also a major focus of the design work. Harvey says residents have pointed out several areas of town that routinely flood, and the community is still recovering from heavy damage caused by the 2024 floods. Those impacts, she says, are a big reason Sioux Rapids was selected for the visioning program in the first place.
During next week’s workshop, a design team will sketch concepts in real time based on community feedback.
Harvey says even a quick stop‑in from residents can help shape the final plan.
Root beer floats and popcorn will be available, and results from earlier surveys and focus groups will be on display.
The committee plans to share more refined concepts during the Tall Corn Days Shine and Show Car Show on July 25, with the full plan expected to be unveiled to the public in September.
Harvey says the final plan will help guide the volunteer‑led Sioux Rapids Hometown Pride committee’s work and strengthen future grant applications.
