Sen. Grassley Recognizes Spencer Retiree for Lasting Impact on Students

This week marks a milestone in Iowa education as longtime Spencer teacher Becky Koenig leads her final student trip to Washington, D.C., capping off a nearly 40-year career of dedicated service to students across the state.

Koenig was recognized by U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley on Tuesday at the nation’s capital.

Throughout her tenure in Sumner, Forest City, Lake Park, and Spencer—where she spent the last 22 years of her career—Koenig has been widely recognized as an exceptional educator, mentor, and coach. Her profound influence on generations of students has left a lasting legacy in the communities she served, says Grassley.

He pointed out Koenig’s contribution to Iowa’s speech education programs as being particularly notable.

For 38 years, Koenig coached large-group speech and played a central role in a major achievement for Spencer’s program, which has sent at least one group to the Iowa All-State Festival every year for the competition’s 50-year history.

Though she is stepping away from the classroom, Koenig’s impact will continue through the students she inspired, the programs she shaped, and the standards of excellence she exemplified, says Grassley.

Iowa has been lucky to have an educator like Koenig, as her passion, commitment, and tireless energy have made a meaningful difference in the lives of countless students, he added.
