A new report says Iowa’s summer swim season is being overshadowed by something far less refreshing: manure‑driven pollution that’s triggering beach advisories across the state.
Food & Water Watch released the analysis this month, mapping Iowa’s beach advisories against livestock density. The group found 56 percent of tested beaches have already had at least one advisory, and 85 percent of those advisories occurred in counties with the highest concentrations of factory‑farmed animals.
According to the report, Iowa’s factory farms generate an estimated 109 billion pounds of manure each year — 25 times more waste than the state’s human population — and more than 4,000 operations operate without water pollution oversight.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has issued 105 beach advisories since Memorial Day. Nearly all were triggered by elevated E. coli levels, which indicate fecal contamination. The report notes that the only tested Iowa beach in a county without factory farms — Honey Creek Beach in Appanoose County — has had zero advisories so far this summer.
The map included in the brief also shows that northwest Iowa counties — including Buena Vista, Calhoun, Cherokee, Clay, Ida, Palo Alto, Pocahontas and Sac — fall into the higher‑density tiers of factory‑farmed livestock. Several appear in the most severe categories on the group’s livestock‑density scale. Food & Water Watch says that level of concentration increases the risk of contamination in both surface water and private wells, especially in rural areas where residents rely on groundwater and must test and treat their own drinking water.
Food & Water Watch Research Director Amanda Starbuck says the problem extends beyond beaches. She says many rural residents may not know what contaminants are present in their wells, and that manure runoff is only part of the picture. Some advisories this summer were linked to algal toxins, fueled by nitrogen and phosphorus runoff from both manure and synthetic fertilizers. Starbuck says pesticides add another layer of pollution, with overspray and runoff entering lakes, rivers and streams.
The group argues that Iowa’s water quality challenges are interconnected: crop systems feed the livestock industry, and both contribute to E. coli spikes, algal blooms and nitrate pollution. Food & Water Watch is urging state lawmakers to adopt stronger regulations on manure management, transparency and water quality protections.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources continues to update its real‑time beach monitoring map, and Food & Water Watch says its findings highlight the need for long‑term statewide action to address what it calls Iowa’s worsening water crisis.
