Man Sentenced for Illegally Reentering U.S. After Being Located in Buena Vista County

A man who illegally reentered the U.S. from Mexico was sentenced Wednesday to 20 months in federal prison.

39-year-old Rafael Martinez De Escobar-Hernandez previously pleaded guilty in Sioux City Federal Court to one count of Illegal Re-entry. He admitted he had illegally entered the United States from Guatemala after being deported in 2019.

On February 2nd, 2024, Martinez De Escobar-Hernandez was arrested in Buena Vista County for a Controlled Substance Violation and Failure to Affix a Drug Stamp for being in possession of distribution quantities of cocaine.

On September 30th, 2024, Iowa Probation contacted Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials regarding De Escobar-Hernandez who had been placed on probation after being arrested on a cocaine charge. ICE officials determined De Escobar-Hernandez is a citizen of Mexico, and had been previously removed from the United States three different times.
