The Cherokee Fire Department says a Wednesday night house fire caused an estimated $45,000 in damage, but no injuries were reported.
Crews were dispatched around 8:42 p.m. to 818 West Cedar St. for a report of a house on fire. Firefighters arrived within minutes and found heavy smoke coming from the basement of the home.
According to the department, three firefighters entered the basement and began attacking the fire, working through high heat conditions to keep the flames contained. Additional crews searched the first and second floors of the home, and all areas were cleared.
Once the fire was knocked down, firefighters ventilated the structure and performed overhaul to check for any remaining hot spots.
Investigators determined the cause was electrical in nature, originating near the home’s electrical panel.
Firefighters cleared the scene just after 10:30 p.m.
Twenty-two firefighters responded to the call, along with the Cherokee Police Department, Cherokee Regional Medical Center Ambulance, Cherokee County Emergency Management and utility crews from Alliant Energy and MidAmerican Energy.
