The Storm Lake City Council is now accepting applications from residents interested in serving on the council, following the resignation of Councilperson Meg McKeon.
McKeon will step down Dec. 31 after being elected mayor earlier this month. She will be sworn in as mayor on Jan. 1.
At its meeting Monday evening, the council voted unanimously to fill McKeon’s seat by appointment rather than holding a special election. Members cited the expense of a county-run election as a factor in their decision.
According to Buena Vista County Auditor Sue Lloyd, the cost of a special election would likely run $5,000-$7,000, covering programing, ballots, official publication, workers and training, noting the election would need to be an all-day event.
The council plans to accept applications and hold interviews before making its choice.
Under state law, the council must make the appointment within 60 days of the vacancy. Residents will retain the right to petition for a special election within 14 days of the appointment.
Applications are available online through the city’s website or Facebook page or by scanning the QR code posted to the city’s Facebook page. Printed forms can also be picked up at City Hall. Completed applications must be submitted by noon on Dec. 10.
McKeon’s council term was set to expire in 2027. Whoever is appointed will serve a two-year term until the next regular election, unless residents petition for a special vote.
