Truck-Tractor Collision Near Spencer Claims Life of Terril Man

A Terril man died in a truck-tractor collision in Clay County over the weekend.

According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, the accident happened shortly before 6pm on Sunday just north of Spencer. 68-year-old Jon Hjelm of Spencer was driving a pickup truck northbound on U.S. Highway 71 north of 300th Street. 77-year-old Roland Taylor of Terril was also driving northbound on the highway in a tractor that was ahead of the truck. Hjelm’s vehicle collided with the tractor, which caused Taylor to be thrown from the tractor. The tractor came to rest in the median.

Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene, and was transported to the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says Hjelm received minor injuries, and was transported to the Spencer Hospital. The pickup was totaled, and the tractor received minor damage.

The accident remains under investigation.
