Sac City police are investigating how a 3‑year‑old girl ended up with THC in her system, after her parents reported she may have eaten a gummy‑type candy off the ground at a city park.
According to a public social media post from the child’s parents, the incident began Thursday evening while their children were playing at a Sac City park during a tumbling practice. They say their daughter, Remi, appeared unusually tired later that night and fell asleep at the dinner table. The next morning, around 6:30 a.m., they found her unresponsive and rushed her to the emergency room.
The parents say medical staff were also initially unable to wake the child and were preparing to airlift her to a children’s hospital when toxicology results came back showing she had tested positive for THC — the psychoactive component of marijuana. The family says they do not keep drugs in their home and believe the child may have picked up and eaten a gummy‑like candy from the ground at the park.
In a separate social media statement, the Sac City Police Department confirmed officers were notified Friday about a small child brought to the ER “after she was seen not acting right.” Police say the parents reported the possibility that the child consumed a gummy‑type item while playing at the park. Sac City police, along with the Sac County Sheriff’s K9 unit, searched the area but found no suspicious materials and no K9 alerts.
The parents say their daughter remained incapacitated for nearly 23 hours before waking Friday evening. They also say the park has security cameras, and police are reviewing footage as part of the investigation. As mandatory reporters, hospital staff notified authorities, and the family says they expect to be cleared through drug testing.
Both the parents and the police department used their social media posts to urge families to talk with children about not eating found food or accepting snacks from strangers, noting that candies and baked goods can sometimes be infused with controlled substances.
