Buena Vista County Promotes Inaugural Walk Day, Set For May 19

Buena Vista County is gearing up for its first‑ever County Walk Day on May 19, an initiative local health officials say is designed to kickstart a broader movement toward improving community wellness.

The county board of supervisors approved the proclamation last month as part of the county’s Community Health Improvement Plan. Public Health Administrator Tracy Gotto told supervisors the county still has one major health goal left to tackle — obesity — and walking is one of the simplest ways to begin addressing it.

The county’s new campaign, “Walking Away to a Healthier Buena Vista,” officially launches on May 19. Public Health says the goal is to make physical activity accessible to everyone, regardless of age, fitness level or location. Residents are encouraged to take a walk over the lunch hour — at work, at school, in their neighborhood or on one of the county’s parks and trails — and share photos on social media.

In a recent message to residents, Buena Vista County Public Health said the proclamation is “not just recognizing walking — it’s starting a movement.” The department says even short daily walks can boost heart health, reduce stress, improve sleep and strengthen muscles. Officials also note that walking is one of the most inclusive forms of exercise, removing barriers for people who may not have access to gyms or structured fitness programs.

The county is also working with local communities to install bench‑workout signs in parks — colorful displays showing simple exercises that can be done using a park bench. The effort is part of a larger push to promote year‑round activity and encourage families, schools and workplaces to build movement into their daily routines.

Buena Vista County’s Walk Day is set for May 19, with a rain date of May 26. The campaign will continue through the summer with additional walking promotions and wellness activities.
