A high-speed pursuit in Storm Lake over the weekend resulted in an arrest and several thousand dollars in damage.
According to the Storm Lake Police Department, an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2025 Nissan Sentra at approximately 3:40am Sunday. The vehicle was driving at a high rate of speed in the area of Northwestern Drive and West Milwaukee Avenue in Storm Lake. Police allege the vehicle accelerated south on Northwestern Drive, and then proceeded east on West 6th Street eluding police at an estimated speed of 80 miles-per-hour. Police pursued the suspect vehicle, which ultimately lost control several blocks later at the intersection of West 6th Street and Vestal Street, driving off a roadway and striking three unoccupied parked vehicles at 613 Vestal Street in Storm Lake, causing an estimated 19 thousand dollars in damage.
The driver, 19-year-old Nyalang Yak of Storm Lake, was located on the scene. Damage to Yak’s vehicle was estimated at 15 thousand dollars. Yak reportedly sustained minor injuries.
Yak was charged with Eluding, a class D felony…Hemp Inhalation, a serious misdemeanor…and simple misdemeanor charges of Failure to Maintain Control…Failure to Obey a Traffic Control Device…and two counts of Failure to Obey a Stop Sign.
The incident remains under investigation, and additional charges are possible.
