Storm Lake Teen Arrested for Drugs, Alcohol in Clay County Stop

A traffic stop in Clay County led to two arrests and multiple drug‑ and alcohol‑related charges late last Wednesday night.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy stopped a vehicle in the 3800 mile of U.S. Highway 71 on Feb. 11. During the stop, the deputy discovered the driver—a 17‑year‑old girl from Storm Lake—was in possession of nicotine products, which she is not legally old enough to have. A search of the vehicle uncovered nicotine, marijuana vape pens, and alcoholic beverages.

Both the driver and her passenger, 18‑year‑old Kevin Patino of Spencer, were taken into custody without incident and transported to the Clay County Jail.

Patino is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor, and possession of a controlled substance – marijuana, a serious misdemeanor.

The juvenile driver faces a longer list of charges: possession of a controlled substance – marijuana, a serious misdemeanor; minor in possession of tobacco; minor in possession of alcohol; speeding; and possession of drug paraphernalia, all simple misdemeanors. She was released to her parents.
