The Storm Lake Community School District has received an award for providing high-quality food to kids this past summer.
The Storm Lake district has been honored with a Turnip The Beet award for offering a fruit and vegetable bar during its summer learning program. The recognition comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service, as they recognize sponsors within the Summer Food Service Program and National School Lunch Program Seamless Summer Option.
A total of 89 sponsors qualified for gold, silver, or bronze Turnip The Beet Awards. Storm Lake received a Silver Award. There are just two other school districts in Iowa to receive the recognition, as both the Ankeny and Waukee districts received a Gold Award.
Storm Lake Superintendent Dr. Stacey Cole says their staff works hard each summer to ensure children have access to the nutrition and quality meals they need to grow, learn, and thrive. Dr. Cole says the district looks forward to continuing their meals program this coming summer.
