Storm Lake Releases June Public Safety Report for Police, Fire Departments

Storm Lake’s public safety agencies have released their June activity reports, showing another busy month for police and steady call volume for fire crews as summer continues.

The Storm Lake Police Department handled 2,682 service calls in June, up from 2,536 during the same month last year. Year‑to‑date, officers have logged 15,538 calls, slightly above the 15,442 recorded at this point in 2025.

In property‑ and person‑related calls, police responded to one burglary, five assaults and one child abuse case. Disturbance calls totaled 25, with eight domestic disturbances reported. Drug investigations dropped to five, compared to 13 last June. Officers also handled six harassment reports and nine suspicious person calls.

Traffic activity remained heavy. Officers conducted 700 vehicle stops — up from 522 last year — and issued 566 traffic warnings. Police investigated 23 traffic accidents, including three with injuries, and responded to 21 motorist assists and eight reckless driver complaints.

Public service calls included 177 citizen assists, 55 animal complaints, 14 bar checks and 21 welfare checks. City code enforcement activity fell sharply to three cases, compared to 116 last June. Officers also conducted 466 security checks, slightly below last year’s 484.

Police assisted other agencies throughout the month, including 42 ambulance assists, nine fire department assists and 36 assists to the law department. Detectives completed 159 felony follow‑ups, 130 misdemeanor follow‑ups and 44 juvenile follow‑ups, clearing 17 cases and executing one search warrant. Investigators logged just over two hours of overtime.

The department’s K9 unit recorded three deployments, one resulting in an alert, and logged 10 hours of training. Police collected $50 in parking ticket revenue, $120 for report copies, $180 in pet licenses and $1,270 in escort and miscellaneous fees.

Meanwhile, the Storm Lake Fire Department responded to two structure fires in June, along with one gas leak, one citizen assist, nine false alarms, one carbon monoxide call and seven other responses.

On the prevention and outreach side, firefighters completed 21 rental inspections, 13 commercial inspections, two life safety presentations and 31 public relations and outreach activities. They also conducted two fire investigations.
