Storm Lake’s Citywide Cleanup program is returning this fall, giving residents another extended opportunity to dispose of unwanted household items at a discounted rate.
City officials say tickets for the 2026–27 cleanup window go on sale today (Tuesday, Sept. 1) and will again cost $15 per load.
The program, which debuted in its expanded format last year, allows residents to haul items to the Buena Vista County Recycle Center at their convenience rather than on a single designated drop‑off day. From November through May of the most recent cycle, residents claimed 273 tickets and disposed of roughly 57 tons of material — a volume city leaders say underscores both the need and the success of the revamped system.
City Council Member Maggie Martinez praised the results, noting that removing 57 tons of refuse represents a significant improvement in neighborhood cleanliness and safety. The council voted unanimously to continue and expand the program for the coming year, with tickets available from September through May. Officials say the partnership with the Buena Vista County Recycle Center has streamlined operations and reduced staff time compared to previous curbside‑style cleanup efforts.
The rules remain unchanged. Tickets are available only to Storm Lake residents, and each household may purchase up to two during the September–May period. Residents must transport their own items, and business or commercial dumping is not allowed. A separate ticket is required if a trailer is used. A total of 350 tickets will be sold on a first‑come, first‑served basis, and all tickets must be presented at the recycle center upon arrival.
Certain materials are prohibited, including construction debris, hazardous waste, yard waste, paint, household chemicals, junk vehicles or parts, tires on rims and ceramic fixtures such as toilets, sinks or tubs. Residents needing to dispose of those items should contact the recycle center for guidance.
