Storm Lake Man Arrested After Being Accused of Lighting Woman’s Hair on Fire

A Storm Lake man was arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman, which included lighting her hair on fire.

At around 10:45pm Monday, the Storm Lake Police Department was called to the Super 8 Motel regarding a welfare check of a female. The female victim informed police that a man identified as 37-year-old Jonathan Belcher of Storm Lake assaulted her earlier that evening during an argument at a residence in the 400 block of West 6th Street. The victim alleged that Belcher pushed her to the ground and lit her hair on fire with a lighter, then damaged several windows in the residence. The victim was able to escape the residence and fled to the motel. Police were then contacted by motel staff. The victim sustained minor injuries to her upper body and hair, which did not require medical treatment.

Belcher was located by police shortly after in the area of Lake Avenue and Milwaukee Avenue, where he was taken into custody without incident. Belcher reportedly has two prior convictions for Domestic Assault from 2019 in Alabama.

Belcher was charged with 3rd Offense Domestic Abuse Assault, a class D felony…and Reckless Use of Fire and 4th Degree Criminal Mischief, both serious misdemeanors. Belcher was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a seven-thousand dollar bond.
