Storm Lake Assault Case Leads to Two Arrests and Recovered Firearm

What started as a Friday morning assault in Storm Lake ended with a tactical raid and a recovered handgun on Harmony Court.

According to the Storm Lake Police Department, the chain of events began around 10 a.m. Friday, when 20‑year‑old Leodan Rojas of Storm Lake allegedly assaulted a woman inside a home at 605 East 12th St. and broke her phone during the argument.

About 40 minutes later, investigators say 22‑year‑old Emily Gonzalez‑Vazquez of Storm Lake arrived at the same home, confronted Rojas, struck him in the face and pointed a handgun at him before leaving the scene.

Both were later located and arrested without incident.

During questioning, Gonzalez‑Vazquez reportedly told officers she had discarded the gun at a residence on Harmony Court — the same area where, as Storm Lake Radio reported yesterday, a large police presence, evacuations and a shelter‑in‑place advisory unfolded Friday evening.

That information led officers to obtain a search warrant, and around 6:30 p.m., the Storm Lake Tactical Entry Team executed the operation at 801 Harmony Court, securing the scene and recovering the firearm believed to be used in the confrontation.

Following the investigation, Rojas was charged with assault causing bodily injury and fourth-degree criminal mischief, both serious misdemeanors. He was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $2,000 bond.

Gonzalez‑Vazquez was charged with assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, an aggravated misdemeanor, and was also booked on a $2,000 bond.
