Statewide “Move-Over” Traffic Enforcement Project Happening Next Week

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is partnering with law enforcement across the state on a traffic enforcement project next week pertaining to the state’s “Move-Over Law.”

The “Move-Over Law” requires motorists to change lanes or slow down if changing lanes isn’t possible when approaching a vehicle on the shoulder displaying flashing lights. This includes emergency vehicles, tow trucks, commercial trucks, and passenger vehicles with flashing lights or hazard lights illuminated.

The enforcement effort will happen next Tuesday through Thursday, June 17th through the 19th. Officials will educate drivers about the importance of yielding to vehicles on the shoulder displaying flashing lights. Expect to see extra law enforcement on the road.

Penalties for violating the “Move-Over Law” include a fine of over 210 dollars, and can include suspension of driver’s license privileges ranging from 90 days to one year in cases of property damage, bodily injury, or death.

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau works with city, county, state, and local organizations to develop and implement strategies to reduce death and injury on Iowa roads using federally funded grants.
