SALUD to be Inducted into Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame

A local organization is among this year’s inductees into the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame.

The SALUD Multicultural Health Coalition of Storm Lake will be inducted as part of a ceremony tomorrow (Tues) at 3pm at the Iowa State Capitol building. The Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame is the most prestigious state-level honor that volunteers can receive as recognition of extraordinary donations of volunteer service to their communities.

SALUD formed in 2010, and strives to make the community more inclusive, understanding, and welcoming. The name was chosen because it means “health” in Spanish, and also serves as an acronym for “Serving, Advocating, Learning, Understanding, and Diversity.” The coalition holds monthly meetings, and volunteers are active and invested to identify and meet community needs as they arise. SALUD is also committed to growing service and civic engagement outside its organization. They host local candidate forums and civic engagement events, provide interpreter training workshops for volunteers and professionals to translate for others in need, host legal and consulate services for refugees and migrant workers, and more.

“Volunteer Iowa” is a bureau within the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services.
