Man Who Escaped Custody in Storm Lake Reportedly Stole Vehicle and Drove to Schaller Before Being Apprehended

More information has been released regarding the capture of a man who escaped from the custody of the Storm Lake Police Department earlier this week.

The department was called to a residence early Monday evening in the 500 block of Hudson Street regarding a trespass incident. The suspect, 25-year-old Luis Rodriguez of Storm Lake, was taken into custody on several misdemeanor charges. Police transported Rodriguez to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Emergency Room for a pre-incarceration screening. Rodriguez reportedly broke free from custody later Monday evening as an officer was escorting Rodriguez to a patrol vehicle. Rodriguez fled on foot to the area of the 15 hundred block of Shoreway Road.

At approximately 2:30 yesterday (Tues) afternoon, the Sac County Sheriff’s Office was called to Schaller on a report of a sighting of a male that matched Rodriguez’s description. Members of the Storm Lake Police Department and Buena Vista and Sac County Sheriff’s Offices responded and located Rodriguez in the area of Cory Avenue and 210th Street in Sac County where he was taken into custody without incident.

After Rodriguez escaped from custody Monday evening, he allegedly entered an unlocked vehicle that belongs to another individual in the one-thousand block of Seneca Street in Storm Lake at approximately 3am Tuesday. Rodriguez allegedly took the vehicle and drove to Schaller, where the vehicle ran out of gas. Rodriguez remained in Schaller until he was reported by citizens in the area.

Rodriguez now faces charges including 1st Degree Theft, a class C felony…Escape From Custody and 4th Degree Criminal Mischief, both Serious misdemeanors…and Interference With Official Acts, 5th Degree Theft, and 2nd Offense Trespass, all simple misdemeanors. Rodriguez was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a 13-thousand 200 dollar bond.
