House in Alta Destroyed by Fire

A house in Alta is considered a total loss due to a fire this weekend.

According to Alta Fire Chief Kirk Reetz, firefighters were called to 113 West 5th Street, across the street from the old high school, at 3:55 Saturday afternoon. No one was in the residence when the fire started, and no one was injured.

According to Reetz, the strong wind made it very difficult to fight the blaze, but he says thankfully the wind didn’t cause the fire to spread any further.

Reetz says it took firefighters about three hours to get the fire under control, but about seven hours were spent doing overhaul and finding all the hot spots. Firefighters were on the scene a total of 11 hours. Over 60 thousand gallons of water was used to battle the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Alta, Aurelia, Schaller, and Storm Lake Fire Departments responded to the scene, along with the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office, and BVRMC Ambulance.
