The Storm Lake Fire Department responded Wednesday afternoon to a grass fire that spread beyond a controlled burn site near the Buena Vista–Sac County line.
Crews were dispatched around 2:06 p.m. to the area of 120th Avenue and 160th Street after a controlled burn escaped its fire line and began moving across open grassland.
When firefighters arrived, they found active flames stretching across a large section of terrain. Crews began suppression efforts immediately, working to contain the fire and stop it from advancing. The department says uneven ground and the size of the burn area made the response more challenging, prompting a request for mutual aid.
Fire departments from Newell and Early assisted at the scene, and crews remained on site for nearly two hours to fully extinguish the fire.
As Storm Lake units were preparing to clear the scene, they were called again — this time to provide mutual aid to the Alta Fire Department for a large structure fire.
The Storm Lake Fire Department thanked all partner agencies for their support during Wednesday’s response.
