The Department of Housing and Urban Development is distributing over 134 million dollars to 29 Iowa counties, including several in the area, that were affected by flooding last summer.
Approximately 80 percent of the federal dollars will go to four counties that were declared the “most impacted and distressed,” including Cherokee and Clay. The rest of the money will be spread among the remaining 25 counties that received a FEMA Disaster Declaration, including Buena Vista and Pocahontas.
The money can support infrastructure such as flood protection, stormwater systems, drinking water, and sewage. It can also cover disaster damage repair and the construction of new single-family homes for low—to moderate-income families.
