Alton Man Sentenced to Up to 10 Years in Storm Lake Sex Abuse Case

An Alton man has been sentenced to up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually abusing a minor in Storm Lake.

Forty-nine-year-old Dany Duarte was sentenced Monday in Buena Vista County District Court by Judge Shayne Mayer.

According to the Buena Vista County Attorney’s Office, the case began with a report made in June after Duarte was accused of inappropriately touching a minor without the victim’s consent. The victim disclosed the incident to family members the same day, and a report was made to the Storm Lake Police Department.

Duarte was arrested June 7 and charged with third-degree sexual abuse, a Class C felony. On Sept. 21, Duarte entered an oral plea of guilty to the offense as charged.

He was sentenced Monday to the lawfully prescribed term of incarceration, not to exceed 10 years, with the Iowa Department of Corrections. Following his release from prison, Duarte will be placed on the sex offender registry and will be subject to parole supervision for the remainder of his life.

The case was investigated by the Storm Lake Police Department and prosecuted by Buena Vista County Attorney Paul Allen.
