Two Storm Lake residents were killed as a result of a two-vehicle accident in Buena Vista County this past Friday morning.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident happened just southeast of Truesdale shortly after 7:10 Friday morning at the intersection of Highway 71 and county road C-43. 30-year-old Mayra Lopez-Zavala of Storm Lake was driving a subcompact SUV eastbound on C-43. Lopez-Zavala pulled out from a stop sign and into the path of a pickup truck that was southbound on Highway 71 driven by 47-year-old Jeffrey Kies of Sioux Rapids. The truck hit the driver’s side of the SUV.
Mayra Lopez-Zavala and a passenger in her vehicle, 62-year-old Maria Lopez-Zavala of Storm Lake, died from injuries sustained in the accident. Kies was treated on the scene for minor injuries.
The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office, Storm Lake Public Safety, the BVRMC Ambulance, and Storm Lake Towing.
