Jake Weissenburger made a 2-foot putt for birdie on the final hole Sunday to earn a 1-shot victory over Nate McCoy in the 45th playing of the Lake Creek Amateur at BVU Lake Creek over the weekend. Weissenburger, a Drake University recruit from Clive, shot 71-66 for a seven-under-par total in the 2-day tournament. (Weissenburger, left, holds the trophy after winning the tournament. McCoy, a former Iowa Golf Association Amateur of the Year from Ankeny, shot 71-67 to finish at six-under-par.
Bret Taylor, of Booneville, won the Senior Division by one stroke at two-under-par. Bob Brooks, of West Des Moines, was the Super Senior Division champion at plus-four.
Among the local linksters, Lake Creek Amateur Defending Champion Aaron Clausen, of Storm Lake, earned a top 10 finish by fashioning rounds of 77 and 76 to earn 10th place overall.
For many golfers, the tournament served as a precursor to the Iowa Golf Association Mid-Amateur Qualifier coming up in June, also at BVU Lake Creek in Storm Lake.
