Olivia Speers delivered a walk off single in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring Avery DeHaan and the Storm Lake softball team beat Denison-Schleswig 2-1 in nine innings Thursday evening in a class 4A regional tournament game played at Storm Lake.
DeHaan led off the 9th inning with her third hit of the game and Cole Richardson followed with a single. After a Grace Kenkel groud out to advance the runners Speers connected on a one-two pitch and belted it to left field for the winning hit.
Avery DeHaan locked horns with Monarchs pitcher Addison Francois all night long. Francois struck out 14 batters and did not walk anyone. DeHaan gave up just four hits and one unearned run while striking out 12 batters with no walks.
Denison-Schleswig scored a run in the 1st inning and the Tornadoes tied it in the 4th after Nadya Hinojos led off the inning with a double and later scored on a ground out by Richardson.
The Monarchs conclude the year 15-18 while the Tornadoes improve to 19-6 and will play at North Polk (18-16) Saturday at 7pm. The game will be broadcast on Mix 101.7 KAYL.
