The Storm Lake Tornado Boys Soccer Team upset the 3A #7 Spencer Tigers 5-2 in the Substate 1 Semi-Final
The teams battled to a 0-0 score for the first 15 minutes of the match before the Tornadoes would see the first chance of the game. The Tornadoes would get fouled in the 18 which lead to a Jose Oropeza PK goal with 25:22 to give the Tornadoes a 1-0 lead. The teams would continue to go back and forth over the next 14 minutes. The Tornadoes would double their lead when Shawn Yang found the back of the net off of a Raymund Hernandez assist to give the Tornadoes a 2-0 lead with 9:10 to go. The Tornadoes would get one more PK chance in the half off a Spencer handball in the 18. The PK goal would be scored by Shawn Yang to make it 3-0 Tornadoes with 4:22 to go. The Tornadoes would go to the halftime break with a 3-0 lead.
The second half saw the Tornadoes score with just under 13 minutes gone in the half when Alberto Gomez-Miramontes found the back of the net to give the Tornadoes the 4-0 lead. The Tigers would cut into the Tornado lead when Ian McRae collected two goals (24:27, and 10:00) to make it Tornadoes up 4-2. The Tornadoes would put the game out of reach when Raymund Hernandez would score with 37 seconds to go and the Tornadoes went on to win 5-2.
The win advances the Tornadoes to a record of 8-8, the Tornadoes move to the Class 3A Substate 1 Final where they will take on Denison-Schleswig in Denison on Wednesday night. The 3A #7 Spencer Tigers wrap up the season with a record of 12-2.
