Newell-Fonda plated four runs in the top of the 10th inning and the Mustangs defeated Storm Lake 13-9 in a game played Tuesday night at Storm Lake.
Pinch hitter Miina Adams led off the 10th with a single to right field. After a sacrifice bunt, Ellie Sievers drilled an RBI double to straight away center field to give the Mustangs a one-run lead. Quinn Sievers followed with a bunt single, Camryn Puhrman reached on an error allowing Sievers to score to make it 11-9. Jocee Walsh then dealt the final blow with a two-run double to cap off the rally.
Walsh pitched seven innings in relief of starter Ellie Sievers and gave up five runs on five hits while striking out eight batters. She also walked seven and hit one. All five runs she allowed came in the 6th inning. She would face only 14 batters over the final four innings of the game.
Storm Lake started the scoring with a four run 3rd inning which was highlighted by Avery DeHaan’s 3-run homer over the left field fence. Newell-Fonda came right back in the top of the 4th inning when Vienna Wingert delivered a clutch two out 2-run single to make it 4-2.
Then came the 6th inning. The Mustangs sent ten batters to the plate and scored six unearned runs to take a 8-4 lead. The Tornadoes would then bat around the order plating five runs on three hits with Avery DeHaan picking up a 2-run single, Cole Richardson came up with an RBI groundout, Grace Kenkel had an RBI single, and Olivia Speers capped it all off with an RBI triple. After it was all said and done Storm Lake led 9-8 heading into the 7th inning.
The Mustangs, ranked 7th in 1A, tied the game on a Mylie Hinders RBI sacrifice fly which scored Bailey Mandernach who led off the inning with a single. Walsh then found her groove and put up four straight scoreless innings and the Mustangs rallied in the 10th.
Avery DeHaan pitched all ten innings and took the loss. She allowed 14 hits while striking out 17 batters and walking three.
Seven different Mustangs had two hits. The Tornadoes had 12 hits on the night with DeHaan going 4-for-6 with 5RBI. Kenkel went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
It was the season opener for Storm Lake and the Tornadoes are back on the diamond Wednesday night when they host Sioux Central.
Newell-Fonda, now 1-1, plays again Wednesday when they host Spirit Lake in Fonda.
