Mustang Softball Team Advances To 1A State Tournament

Anna Mercer pitched a complete game 4-hitter helping Newell-Fonda to a 4-1 win over Woodbine in a class 1A regional final played Monday night at Fonda.

The Mustangs never trailed in the game as they plated a first inning run without a hit. Kinzee Hinders led off with a walk, stole 2nd base, took 3rd on a sacrifice bunt by Rylee Hogrefe, and then scored on a ground out by Mercer. The Mustangs then strung together four straight two out hits in the bottom of the 4th inning to plate three more runs. Ellie Sievers roped a double down the left field line and would score after the left fielder misplayed it making it 2-0. Jocee Walsh then singled, that was followed by Camryn Puhrman’s RBI double scoring Walsh to make it 3-0. McKayla Hanson then drove in Puhrman with a base hit to make it 4-0.

Woodbine would score their only run in the 6th inning when they strung together a pair of hits.

The Mustangs ended up with five hits in the game. Mercer picked up her 16th win of the year allowing one run on four hits while striking out seven and walking two.

Woodbine concludes the year 19-7. The Mustangs, now 24-11, will play in the 1A State Tournament next week in Fort Dodge with their first round game to be played Tuesday evening.
