The Newell-Fonda softball team will be in Fort Dodge next week with a chance to repeat last year’s state championship. The Mustangs beat Woodbine 4-0 Monday night in their regional final played at Fonda.

Kierra Jungers continued her dominance striking out 14 batters and allowing only three hits in her 3rd shutout of the post-seaosn. In the Mustangs three tournament wins Jungers has thrown 18 scoreless innings allowing only six hits while striking out 32 and walking four. The sophomore is now 26-4 on the season.

The Mustangs got on the board in the bottom of the 5th inning when, with two outs, Emma Erickson reached on an error. Macy Sievers then singled to right field, that was followed by Mia Walker’s single and Mary Walker would then drill a triple down the right field line and when it was all done the Mustangs plated three unearned runs. They would add one more in the 6th when Anna Mercer scored on a wild pitch.

Macy Sievers led an eight hit attack going 2-for-3. Newell-Fonda is now 35-4 and will play Martensdale-Saint Mary’s next Tuesday at 7pm in the first round of the 1A state tournament. Woodbine concludes the year 21-7.

Newell-Fonda has now reached the state softball tournament in 14 of the last 18 seasons winning state titles in 2021 and 2008.
