Fort Dodge St Edmond Handles Newell Fonda in Softball Region Final

#9 Fort Dodge St Edmond rolled to a shockingly convincing 11-1 victory over #4 Newell Fonda in five innings tonight (Mon) in a 1A softball region championship game in Fonda.

Ed Ed scored two 1st inning runs, then sent 11 batters to the plate in a seven-run 2nd inning, which included a three-run homerun by Faith Shirbroun, her 6th of the year. The Gaels added two more runs in the 3rd.

The Mustangs got their run in the 5th on a two-out RBI single to right by Mia Walker. Newell Fonda had runners on 1st and 3rd and needed another run to prolong the game, but a short pop out to first base ended the game.

St Edmond had ten hits, and also drew nine walks. The Mustangs had four hits. St Ed pitcher Kaili Henning registered six strikeouts and walked two.

The Gaels avenge a season-opening 7-1 loss at Newell Fonda, and improve to 23-11. St Edmond will play in their home complex at Rogers Park, with 1A state quarterfinal games next Tuesday, July 18th.

Newell Fonda wraps up a 29-9, as their state softball appearances streak is snapped at five years. The Mustangs say farewell to seniors Mary Walker, Mia Walker, and Emma Erickson.
